Assignment 1: AMCA Logo

Assignment: Using the internet, search for graphic design examples displaying good and bad application of the basic principles of design or theories of design.

Maybe this doesn't technically count as a design I found on the internet - since I actually designed it myself - but I certainly didn't know much about proper theory or design at the time. So, I'm going to critique myself here.

I don't think it's all that bad (am I biased?). The balance is asymmetrical. I had originally tried to incorporate two symmetrical mosquitoes, but after some time it was decided that an emerging mosquito would have better symbolism ("young professionals"). Trying to incorporate all life stages resulted in a mess. There was just too much to look at in addition to the text.

I believe the mosquito is the dominant element of this design. Its darkness and contrasting color pattern bring your eye to it first. The other elements of the design - the water, the outer ring, and the mosquito pupa - are subdued. They blend into the background, reducing their visual weight.

The design is relatively simple. There are no background elements. Everything appears in a single plane of view.

It was my hope to design something that would be simplistic, easily readable, recognizable, and with some degree of symbolism. The color choice was based off of the AMCA (American Mosquito Control Association) logo for their 7th Anniversary.

Feel free to let me know what you think about it.

This is part one of two parts.
