Assignment 1: Happy Trails T-Shirt Design
Assignment: Using the internet, search for graphic design examples displaying good and bad application of the basic principles of design or theories of design.
Here is another graphic that I designed to be used on a T-shirt. It was made for the University of Florida's Urban Entomological Society, although I have no idea whether it has actually been used or not. This was what I was told - draw something cute with trailing ants or termites and include happy trails somewhere on the image.
I don't like this one quite as much now as I used to. I think there is a lot of empty space at the bottom of the image, and it looks unbalanced that way.
The ants that are large and well-drawn are cute, but the rest are suggestive of someone who was in a rush and didn't want to spend time on drawing better ants. Then again, some would say that good art isn't about drawing everything, and that some things should be suggested. But I personally don't like this image.
The large ant(s) in the bottom right hand side are the dominant elements. They are colored, shaded, detailed etc. while the other ants are small and simple and the anthill itself is very basic (maybe too basic). This image definitely displays some proportion, with smaller elements (the far away ants) receding into the background and larger elements (two to three big ants) popping out into view.
I see something of a mix between flowing and progressive rhythm.
The text placement seems off to me, but I couldn't find a better home for it. My client was not very helpful in providing ideas or feedback, either.
Feel free to tell me what you think.
Part two of two parts.
